Displaced by disaster:
The lives of climate migrants inside Bhola Slum

Bhola slum is also known as Bhola Bosti in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This particular slum possesses a distinctive feature - all of its inhabitants come from a location called Ilisha, which is located on Bhola Island. The slum was formed when people left Bhola Island in 1970 due to the severe Bhola Cyclone. Situated on the southern coast of Bangladesh, Bhola Island is a hotspot for climate change-induced disasters such as riverbank erosion and frequent cyclones. The actual Bhola slum which was formed before the war has been replaced with a nearby cramped land, making the new slum inhabitable. However, more than 100-150 climate refugee families are currently residing in this new narrow slum, where any gap can hardly be found for sunlight and wind to pass.
